Nation States

What are the foundations of the nation-state you are studying? Is there a founder/founders? Founding documents? Myths?

Case study: Italy and Germany.

How has this state evolved and changed? Why?

What about cultural, social and linguistic foundations?

What is the aim of this “entity”? It’s reason for being?

Can we be critical of this arrangemnent? What might be the next step for ordering human affairs?

Nation Building Assignment

Nation Building: Historical Case Studies

Since the Westphalian Settlement, states have held a unique position in Europe and the world that it colonized. Living outside a state is almost unthinkable, yet we rarely look at how these entities came about in the early modern period. There are several models, but no nation came to fruition by a single route.

  • “Organic” (Iceland)
  • Conquest (UK)
  • Legislative or other fiat (Vatican City)
  • Rebellion/Revolution/War of Independence (USA)
  • Religious ideal (Tibet)

Describe how these nations were constructed (or sometimes how they came apart). Why did this nation-state develop as it did? Evaluate how the state evolved: which was most influencial geopolitics, environment, language, race/ethnicity, religion, nationalism and other nations influenced this development. (300-500 words).  Be ready with a brief, 1-2 minute, presentation.
